John was an only child and son of a Master Baker, he attended Bristol Grammar School from 1934-1937. John married Marianne Long.

John was killed when his aircraft, Bristol Blenheim IV V6022 crashed in north Yorkshire two miles short of its destination, R.A.F. Thornaby, after a convoy protection sortie over the North Sea. The reasons for the crash are unclear and the other 2 crew members on board, were also killed.
