John Henry (Jack) Gwinell was born in 1884 in Kingswood, Bristol. He was the son of Henry Frederick and Charlotte Gwinell (nee Day). His father also worked as a grocer and he was born in Eastington, Gloucestershire. John's parents married in 1883. His mother died in 1900 aged 41 and his father remarried Emily Packer in 1902. His siblings were Alfred, Richard, Ernest and Lucy.
John attended Kingswood Boys School where he was known as Jack. He is remembered on the Kingswood Boys School Memorial.
John served with the 14th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. John died of his wounds on the 27th February 1917 in France.
John is buried at the St. Sever Cemetery Extension Ref: O. V. H. 9., Rouen, France.
