Further information:

John was born in Saltash, Cornwall, the son of a postman and the eldest of two brothers. In 1939 the family were living in Kingswood.

John died when the HMS Prince of Wales was lost, attempting to intercept Japanese troop convoys off the coast of Malaya. The vessel's final battle took place three days after the attack on Pearl Harbour when she was sunk alongside the battlecruiser HMS Repulse by Japanese bombers. 329 souls, including John, lost their lives. The HMS Prince of Wales and the Repulse became the first ever leading primary ships to be sunk solely by air power on the open sea.
