John joined the Navy in 1911 when he was described as having brown hair, brown eyes and 5 feet 6.5 inches tall with a birthmark above his right elbow. He left the service in 1927, re-joined in 1929 and was demobilised in 1938. However, he was called up in 1939 and served on HMS Drake, which was the main Naval Barracks in Devonport, until his death from pneumonia in 1943 in the Royal Naval Hospital.
