Son of an aeroplane manufacturing clerk, Alexander attended Bristol Grammar School from 1937 to 1941.
Alexander's battalion saw action in Northern Italy helping to drive the enemy back to the Arezzo Line at the end of June. The army continued to fight, steadily driving the enemy further Northward and on 30th July the battalion attacked and captured the town of Santa Lucia. It was a small but fierce battle but one in which Alexander was mortally wounded and he died of his wounds 3 days later.
