John was born in Aldershot Hampshire. He signed up to the Royal Artillery in 1938 and was subsequently called up on the outbreak of war.

He was serving aboard the SS Knoll in March of 1943 when he died at sea from accidental drowning.

John's rank was Gunner not L/B as on Memorial.
