Further information:

John was born at St. George , Bristol, the son of a pork butcher and the eldest child of five with four younger sisters. John worked as a baker before joining the Royal Army Service Corps in Woolwich in 1881 at the age of 20. He was described as being 5' 51/2" with brown hair blue eyes and a fresh complexion. He served until 1893 and his service included a Nile expedition. John married Sarah Wood in 1887 and two years later they had their only child, a son William. After he left the army John worked as a boot machinist then in a variety of labouring jobs.

By 1911, John was living in Ontario Canada and would have been middle-aged when he enlisted in the 3rd Regiment, Canadian Garrison Artillery. His wife continued to reside in Kingswood and the nature of John's war service is not known. In August of 1918 John was admitted to hospital in Montreal where a diagnosis of cancer of the tongue was made. John refused any treatment for his condition and he died a year later.
