Further information:

John was born in Mangotsfield, the son of a bootmaker and the eldest child of four children with a brother and two sisters. By 1901 the family were living in Carmarthenshire. John married Edith Scott in 1906 and together they had four children, three girls and a boy. The youngest girl was just 2 years old when John died.
John, his father and his younger brother George all signed up to the Welsh regiment on the outbreak of war and a year later all three had lost their lives. George and John died three days apart and their father was found drowned in Port Talbot just three weeks later.

John and George were in the same battalion (1st/4th Battalion, Welsh Regiment) and embarked for Gallipoli on 19th July 1915. Both men were killed during the Landing and Battle at Suvla Bay (6–15 August 1915) John was killed in action just two days after disembarking and George died three days later as a result of his wounds on board a hospital ship. The battle was a British failure at a cost of 21,500 casualties. John’s body was never found and George was buried at sea. The Helles Memorial where they are both remembered is one of five memorials to those who lost their lives during the 8-month long Gallipoli Campaign. The Helles Memorial alone bears 20,000 names and many of those have no known grave.
