Further information:
John was born in Bitton, the son of a painter and the eldest child of five with three sisters and a brother. He married Mary Ann Brent in 1887 and together they had four children, two girls and two boys. By 1901 the family were living in Carmarthenshire. John and both of his boys, John and George, all signed up to the Welsh regiment. Both John junior and George were killed on active service in Turkey within 3 days of each other and John senior died 3 weeks later.
John served with the 1st Supernumerary 4th Battalion, Welsh Regiment.
In September 1915, John senior was working as a cook and was stationed at Vivian Camp, Port Talbot. He disappeared from the camp on the night of the 2nd of September and to his fellows he had appeared depressed. It is likely that he had just received news of the death of both of his sons. He was missing for seven days before his body was recovered from the docks and the coroner recorded an open verdict.
