Further information:

John was born in Gerrard's Cross Buckinghamshire, the son of a bricklayer and the eldest child of six children. Shortly after the birth of his three sisters, the family moved to Kingswood where his two younger brothers were born. John was working as a mason's labourer when he enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1907 at the age of 20. He was described as 5' 51/2" tall with brown hair, hazel eyes and a fresh complexion. In 1908 he was posted to India where he served for 6 years before returning home shortly after the outbreak of war. He was then posted to France with the British Expeditionary Force where he served for ten months before being posted to Salonika. After returning home for five months, he was once again posted to France in September 1916, where he served for two years before finally being killed in action, less than a month before the armistice. John lost his life during The Allied Advance to Victory, also known as The Hundred Days Offensive (8 August - 11 November 1918) which was a victory for the allies and brought about the end of the war.
