Joseph Cousins was born in Almondsbury. The 1901 Census shows Joseph age 9, a scholar, living with his father Thomas and grandmother Louisa Weeks in Almondsbury. By the 1911 Census he is a farm labourer living in Earthcott with his wife Lois. At this time they had no children.

Joseph enlisted in September 1914 and was Killed in Action in France on 26th August 1916 fighting with the 1st Somerset Light Infantry, which fought on the western front from August 1914.

Joseph is commemorated at Thiepval Memorial, a major war memorial to the 72,195 missing British and South African men who died in the Battles of the Somme between 1915 and 1918 with no known grave.
