Joseph was the youngest of 7 children and he had 6 older siblings - 3 brothers and 3 sisters. His father worked in the pottery industry as a mould maker. Joseph married Elsie Hargreaves in 1935 and she too, worked in the pottery industry, as a gilder.

Joseph was killed in action and died at sea. The circumstances around his death are unknown.
