Joseph had two sisters and was the middle child of the three. He married Margaret Dora Hardwick in 1939.

Joseph served with the 10th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. His regiment took part in the Burma campaign and Joseph was killed fighting the Japanese 18th Imperial Division at the Battle of Pinwe in Burma, when his company was hit by heavy Japanese mortar and gun fire.
