Joseph Laurence Hull was born in 1896 in Northfield in Worcestershire. His parents were Joseph and Lucy Ethel Hull (nee Gifford). He was the fifth of seven children, his siblings were Gordon Burnett, Herbert Cranley, Lucy Helen, Robert, Mary Kathleen and Marjorie. Robert died as a child. His father was born in Iron Acton and he was a coal contractor traveller. Although the family were still living in Northfield in 1911 they had moved to Gifford Cottage in Rangeworthy by 1916.

Joseph Laurence joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as a Private, but was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 13th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment. On deployment to France on 9th September 1916 he transferred to the 4th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment.

Joseph was wounded on 18th October 1916 and died the following day at the age of 20. He is buried in Dartmoor Cemetery in Becordel-Becourt in the Somme in France. He is commemorated in a stained glass window in Rangeworthy Church. He was posthumously awarded the British War and the Victory medals.
