Joseph signed up as a reservist in 1906 and joined 1st Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, at the outbreak of war. He was twice wounded in action and finally killed in action during the Somme offensive. This battle lasted 140 days from the 1st July 1916 and resulted in a minor territorial gain for the allies at a cost of 620,000 casualties. The cemetery where Joseph was buried was begun by a dressing station in August 1916 and used as a front-line cemetery.
