Leonard George Player was born in 1893 in Hambrook. His parents were George and Hester Player and they lived at Pye Corner in Hambrook. He was brother to Ernest, Ada and Bertie. Leonard left Hambrook school to go to work in May 1905. His father worked as a farm labourer and he had been born in Winterbourne

Leonard joined the 3rd Base Remount Depot of the Royal Army Service Corps as a private. He died in January 1916 at the age of 23. He is buried in the Janval Cemetery (Ref I.B.1.) in Dieppe in France. Leonard is also remembered on the war memorial in All Saints Churchyard in Winterbourne Down and Whiteshill War Memorial in Hambrook
