Leslie was the son of a sanitaryware pottery modeller and had one older brother. He went into the same trade as his father, then joined the Super Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery, which was stationed at Dover. Dover was the frontline up until the Normandy landings in June 1944. Leslie’s regiment operated heavy guns which were used to bombard German positions in France and German shipping. Dover was bombarded in return and Leslie died as a result of an accident whilst on active service.
