Leslie was born and raised in South Shields, county Durham. Both of his parents were accountancy clerks and he had an older brother and an older sister. His father saw service as a sailor during WW1 and in 1939 Leslie was living with his widowed mother and his older sister Edith. In 1940 he married Emma Horn Burdon.

Leslie died as the result of an accident. On the evening of his death, he was stationed at Falmouth, and while off-duty got into a scuffle with a Home Guard on sentry duty during which he sustained stab wounds to his abdomen from a bayonet. Leslie was taken to Falmouth Hospital where he later died.
