Lionel served with the 5th Battalion. Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Lionel’s battalion went over to France in the D-Day landings and on 10th - 11th July were involved with the Battle for Hill 112 a strategically advantageous area of ground near Caen in Normandy, that had changed hands between the Germans and the allies several times. The fighting was fierce and lasted for 19 hours and although the Cornwalls did not manage to retake the hill they did permanent and lasting damage to the 10th Panzer tank division. In the process they lost 250 men including Lionel, who was buried near hill 112 before being re-buried in the War Cemetery.
