Lionel was born in Charfield, the son of a wheelwright and the youngest child of four children with a sister and two brothers, one of whom died as a child. Lionel’s father died when Lionel was aged nine years old.
Lionel initially enlisted in the Gloucestershire Regiment (23318) before transferring to the 1st Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). He was killed in action six weeks before the armistice and in the run up to the Battle of the St. Quentin Canal (29 September - 2 October 1918). He was buried not far from the frontline. The result of the battle was a decisive allied victory but at a cost to the allies of 24,000 casualties.
