Further information:

Although registered with the Christian names of Major Harry, his military records just record Harry, presumably as using the name “Major” could cause confusion. On the 1881 Census, Major is living with his grandparents and a their son William.

He married twice, the first marriage was to Hannah Taylor in Dudley in 1898, and she died in 1909 (Dudley). The home address of his second wife Sarah (nee Aplin) was given as Badminton Road, Downend, Bristol on the war pension card, they married in the 2nd quarter of 1918 in the Chipping Sodbury district.

Major Harry Mantle served with the Royal Engineers (Inland Waterways Transport) and died on 05/11/1918 (Pneumonia, died Sandwich Military Hospital). Medals: possibly Memorial Death Plaque of WW1 only as no record of any medal entitlement traced (he may not have gone overseas).

Major Harry Mantle is commemorated on the Downend Christ Church Memorial and the Staple Hill Page Park Memorial.
