Maldwyn enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1939 and on the day of his death it is likely that he was serving aboard the British Steam Merchant Empire Roseberry when on the 24th August 1944 she struck a mine two miles NE of Arromanches The entire crew and three gunners including Maldwyn were lost. There were no survivors. Maldwyn was originally reported as missing which was changed to presumed killed 6 months later.
