Mervyn was the eldest of two, having a younger sister. He married Gladys Florence Williams in 1936 and had 2 sons, the eldest of whom was just 4 when Mervyn died. Mervyn was killed during the Tunisian Campaign in the first battle of Tunisia which was a defeat for the allies. He was originally buried in Beja, but later transferred to the War Cemetery in Medjez-El-Bab.
