He served as rear gunner on Lancaster Mk III LM676 VN-W when it took off from RAF Skellingthorpe at 4.15 pm on the 17th December on a bombing raid of Munich. At 10pm the aircraft was hit by flak and exploded. Two survivors were blown clear by the explosion but the remaining 7 including Michael were killed. Theirs was one of 4 Lancasters of a total of 280, lost in the raid.
