Gilbert was stationed at RAF Elvington York when an explosion occurred on board his Halifax bomber lll NA174, whilst it was being prepared for a bombing mission. A fire broke out in the cargo bay, a bomb exploded and four other detonations occurred, disintegrating the aircraft and killing thirteen airmen. Amongst these was Gilbert and 4 other members of his crew.
