Further information:
Nathaniel was born in Bitton, the son of a gardener and the youngest of two brothers. In 1901 he was a student at the local technical college and the family were still living in Bitton. In 1905 Nathaniel began working as a clerk with the postal service and by 1911 he had moved to London to live with an uncle and continue working in the Civil Service. At the end of 1912 he married Gertrude Jessie Chennell in Marylebone and Geoffrey Charles was born a year later. Geoffrey Charles was four years old when his father died.
The 138th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, was formed in Autumn 1915 from volunteers many of whom lived in the Borough of Hampstead, north west London. Most of the Battery's initial training from October 1915 to March 1916 took place on Hampstead Heath and the battery was nicknamed "The Hampstead Heavies. The battery landed in France in April 1916 and for the rest of that year were mainly based South of Bethune. The following year they engaged in heavy fighting around Ypres and later, on the Belgian coast near Nieuport Bains, which is where Nathaniel was killed in action.
