Further information:

Nathaniel was born in Rangeworthy, the son of a labourer and the youngest child of four children with two sisters and a brother. In 1911 the family were living at Wick Lane Camerton Bath and Nathaniel, his father and his older brother William were all working as miners.

Nathaniel served with "A" Company, 1st/5th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, his battalion mobilised for war in March 1915 and landed at Boulogne where the formation became the 144th Brigade of the 48th Division and engaged in various actions on the Western Front including the Battle of Albert, the pursuit of the German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line and the Battle of Cambrai. Nathaniel was killed in action less than 3 weeks before the Armistice during the Battle of the Selle (17–25 October 1918) which was part of the Hundred Days Offensive. The village of Pommereuil, where Nathaniel is buried, was the scene of severe fighting on the 23rd and 24th October 1918.
