Neil signed up to the Royal Artillery in 1938 and on the day of his death, he was serving aboard the British Motor Merchant ship 'Panama' on route from Cardiff to Philadelphia when it capsized and sank in stormy weather North of the Azores with the loss of around 50 souls. Neil was originally reported as missing which was changed to presumed killed in action after 3 months.
