Philip Alfred Whatley was born in about 1896 in Brislington in Bristol. His parents were Francis George Whatley and Elizabeth Charlotte (nee Brewer) Whatley. His four siblings were Frederick William, Henry Thomas, Dora Emily and Francis George. Dora died in 1906
The family were living at the Post Office in Horton in 1911. Philip’s father was a domestic gardener and he had been born in Shepton Mallet in Somerset. His mother was a sub-postmistress and she had been born in Blandford in Dorset. Philip was working as an under-gardener in 1911
Philip enlisted in Bristol in the 1st/4th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment as a Private and he later transferred to the 2nd/5th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. He died in April 1917 at the age of 21. He is buried at Vadencourt British Cemetery in France. He is commemorated on the memorial in Rangeworthy Parish Church and also on the Rangeworthy Methodist Chapel Memorial which is also now in Rangeworthy Parish Church. He is also commemorated on the Chipping Sodbury Cottage Hospital Memorial Board now at Yate and District Heritage Centre. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal
