During the war he worked on HMS President III a shore base in Bristol where the pay records for sailors serving as gunners aboard Merchant Ships were maintained and individuals allocated for this type of service, on board defensively equipped merchant ships, were trained. It is not possible to say how Philip died although several Bristol bombing raids took place at this time.
