On the 1901 Census and 1911 census, he was recorded as Ralph only. On the army records recorded as Wallace Ralph. He had previously joined the Bristol Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1911, giving his occupation as a Whip Maker and home address as 88 Lawn Road, Fishponds. His name is recorded as Wallace Ralph H Bromley Martin. The record card does not provide any further information, so it can be presumed he enlisted with the Gloucestershire Regiment at the outbreak of the war and later served with the 112th Company, Machine Gun Corps. The beneficiary of Ralph's pension money was his Mother Mercy who was recorded as wholly impaired with paralysis to her arm and leg.
