Reginald, also known as Thomas, was born in Kingswood, the son of a general labourer and the eldest child of six with four brothers and a sister.

Reginald's regiment (the 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers) mobilised to Cape Helles Turkey in April 1915 taking part in the Battles of Helles and Suvla. After the allied defeat, they were moved to France in March 1916 and took part in the Battles of the Somme, Arras and Ypres. Reginald was wounded during the Third Battle of Ypres and died of his wounds at the Canada Farm dressing station located not far from Ypres.
