Born in Bristol, Richard attended Kingswood Grammar School where he gained his school certificate. He joined the police force in 1934, working in Islington in 1935 and attending Metropolitan Police College Hendon in 1937 for further training and by the time he was called up he had reached the rank of Inspector. Richard married Christine Clark in 1941. At the time of his death 4 Squadron were based at RAF Funtington in Sussex and from there carried out raids on enemy communications targets and V-1 launch sites. He died in the course of War Service but precise details of his death are not known.
