Richard was the son of a butcher/grocer and had a younger sister Dorothy. Richard and another flight sergeant were on Convoy patrol when they were last heard reporting failure of the port engine of their Beaufighter plane. The aircraft subsequently ditched into the sea 33 miles North of Cherchel Algeria and both pilots were lost.
