Robert married Molly Louise Mace in 1939 and served aboard HMS Hermes an aircraft carrier. Robert died when the Hermes was sunk south-east of Trincomalee, Ceylon by Japanese dive bombers. An escorting Australian destroyer HMAS Vampire, a corvette The Hollyhock and two tankers were sunk at the same time. 590 survivors of the attack were rescued by the hospital ship Vita.
