Son of a colliery carter, Robert was born in Scotland and had an older brother an older sister and a younger sister. His mother died when he was just 5 years old.

He married Gladys Mary Collins who was from Alveston in 1924 and had a daughter. Gladys died in 1938 whilst Robert was serving in Iraq and she is also buried in St Helen Churchyard. Robert died in Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy, Scotland, possibly whilst he was stationed at a nearby airbase. The cause of his death is unknown.
