He attended Chipping Sodbury Grammar School between 1924 and 1926, then went to Rendcomb College, Cirencester where he was a successful athlete. He later trained in law in Bristol. He joined the RAF in 1941 and the 47th squadron in 1943 where he was a navigator on Mosquitos. In 1945 his squadron was involved in bombing Japanese ground forces in Singapore. He was at the end of his tour of duty when his Mosquito went into a nose dive from which it did not recover and as a result his aircraft fell into the river. He was killed along with the pilot and his body was never found.
