Roland was born in Bitton, the son of a paper mill labourer and a middle child of ten children with five sisters and four brothers. Roland married Alice Palmer in 1908 and their only child Cyril was born the following year.

Roland enlisted in the 13th Devonshire Regiment (44326) in November 1916, when he was described as 5' 7 ½ " tall. He transferred to the 42nd Battalion, 162nd Labour Company, Royal Berkshire Regiment (33573) in December 1916 when he mobilised to France. In May 1917 he transferred to the Labour Corps and served for the rest of the war as a munitions’ labourer. On 26th December 1918, 6 weeks after the armistice, Roland sustained a fractured skull and died 6 days later in Beaufort War Hospital, Fishponds. The cause of his death was recorded as skull fracture complicated by acute meningitis.
