Ronald was the son of a pottery worker and the second eldest of four children with two brothers and a sister.

Ronald served with the 23rd Field Company of the 1st Division Royal Engineers which embarked for France as part of the British Expeditionary Force in 1940. After evacuation from Dunkirk in June 1940 the 1st Division were made responsible for field forces and coast defence artillery on the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire coast. Ronald died as the result of an unspecified accident and his death was registered in Gainsborough Lincolnshire.
