Further information:

The 1st Gloucestershires were part of an inadequate defence force stationed in Burma after the Japanese entered the war in 1941. They were unable to repel the advancing Japanese Army when it attacked in December 1941 and by March 1942 the Burma army was in full retreat. On 7th March, the Burma Army evacuated Rangoon after implementing a scorched earth policy to prevent the Japanese using its facilities and Roy was reported as having died of wounds most probably during the retreat.
