Roy was the son of a blacksmith, who later became a colliery riveter. Roy had an older brother Jack.

Roy's records state that he died, rather than being killed in action or having died of wounds. His death was registered in Chatham, which is also where he is buried. This suggests that he may have died at the large Naval Hospital, located there. The cause of his death is unknown.
