Royce was educated in Lewisham School, Weston Super-mare and later at Thornbury Grammar School. On leaving school he worked for a time with Messrs Thurston & Co, the solicitors and then at Berkeley Estates.
Royce joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve about six months before the War and at the time of his death he was stationed at RAF Coltishall in Norfolk flying single-seater Hawker Hurricanes. On the 14th December he was escorting a night bombing raid when his aeroplane crashed into the sea.
