Further information:
Roydon was born in Kingswood, the youngest of two boys born to William, a council office caretaker, and his wife Anna. In addition, Roydon had three older half-brothers and two older half-sisters who were from his mother's previous marriage. Roydon's older brother Frank, also died in active service 20 months before Roydon.
Roydon is likely to have enlisted on his 18th birthday in April 1917 and would have joined his regiment (the 2nd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment) in France later that year after training. Roydon died, probably no more than six months, after reaching the front, where he would have seen action in the First Battles of The Somme. He was killed in action during fighting to recapture the town of Villers-Bretonneux from the Germans who had taken it the previous day. The Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux (24–25 April 1918) was a victory for the allies at a cost of 15,500 casualties.
