Samuel was born in Scotland, the son of a career soldier and the youngest of 4 boys. In 1913 he was working as a railway porter for the London and North West Railway then subsequently worked in the locomotive department at Patricroft just outside Manchester.
Samuel enlisted with the 5th Battalion, in his home town on the outbreak of war and died just 3 weeks later, whilst guarding the Railway near Chipping Sodbury. The precise circumstances around his death are not known.
