Samuel married Vera in 1938 and in 1939 he transferred into the RAF from the Army where he was initially appointed as a Class F Reservist. He was undertaking pilot training over Grantham Lincolnshire from RAF Spittlegate in the unarmed Oxford AB767 when it came under attack from a Luftwaffe Junkers aircraft. During the course of manoeuvres, both aircraft collided, with the Oxford crashing in Dysart Road Grantham. Samuel and all the members of both crews were killed
