Samuel was born and raised in County Durham and the son of a stone mason. In 1939 he was living in the family home with his widowed mother.
On the day of his death Samuel was serving aboard the British Motor Merchant 'Jedmoor ' which was part of convoy SC-42 on route from Sydney Australia to Glasgow Scotland carrying a cargo of 7400 tons of iron ore. At 23.16 hours on 16 Sep 1941 the vessel was torpedoed and sunk northwest of St. Kilda Scotland by U-boat U-98. The master, 25 crew members and five gunners including Samuel were lost. There were 5 survivors.
