On the day of his death, Samuel was serving aboard the British Steam Merchant ‘Harbury’, which was part of convoy ONS-5 on route from Swansea to New Brunswick Canada, carrying a cargo of 6129 tons of anthracite. Around 02.45 hours on 5 May 1943, 500 miles south of Cape Farewell, the vessel was torpedoed and sunk by U-boat U-628. Six crew members and one gunner, Samuel, were lost. The 42 survivors were rescued and landed at St John's Canada.
