Sidney was born in Kingswood, the son of a coal miner and a middle child of eight children with a half-brother, three brothers and three sisters. Sidney was working as a collier and living in Blackhorse Road Kingswood in 1921 when he married Elsie Violet Smith a boot machinist. Their first child was born the following year and they went on to have three more children. By 1939, Sidney was no longer working as a miner.

Sidney enlisted in the Royal Air Force in Penarth in March 1941. He died on 30th March 1944 and was buried near his home but the circumstances surrounding his death are not known.
