Further information:

Stafford enlisted in the 272nd Mechanical Transport Company, Army Service Corps in 1915 when he was described as 5'4 ½ " tall. He embarked for France in March 1917 and would have worked with the various fighting troops during actions on the Western Front. On the day of his death there were no major offensives taking place so he may have lost his life during the ongoing trench warfare that resulted in 300 deaths per day throughout the war.
