Stafford Victor Thornell was born in 1894 in Frampton Cotterell. His parents were Daniel and Elizabeth Thornell. His siblings were Kate, Clara, Harry, Edwin, Lilian and Ivor. His father was a boot and shoe maker and he had been born in Frampton Cotterell. The family was living in Watleys End in Winterbourne in 1901

Stafford joined the 13th Hussars Regiment as a private. He died in May 1918 at the age of 24. The local historian Ian Haddrell records that Stafford enlisted in Shirehampton and that he was in the Household Cavalry. He also records that he died of wounds in Mesopotamia. Stafford is commemorated on the Basra Memorial (Ref: Panel 1), Iraq. His name appeared on the Winterbourne Roll of Honour
